  • Riding in Cars

    August 8, 2012

Ah, the simple joy of car rides. Most dogs thrill at it, but as exhilarating as this experience can be for your pooch, there are some serious risks to the sport. Unrestrained pets cause roughly 30,000 accidents every year.

Melissa Ramirez, founder of Zerimax Doggie Seatbelts, tells a story that is sadly all too familiar. In 2008, her husband was in a car accident. The impact caused the airbags to inflate and her husband was unharmed thanks to his seatbelt. Max, their Miniature Pinscher, asleep on the front seat, was unrestrained and not so lucky. He was thrown across the car and landed at the foot peddles, suffering a spinal cord hematoma and paralysis of the back legs. Max is regaining his ability to use all four legs after countless surgeries and months of physical therapy. So far, Melissa calculates they've spent about $10,000 on Max's recovery. Something, she admits, might have been avoided with a simple $25 pet restraint.

  • Essential Fatty Acids Help Fight Fleas from the Inside Out

    June 2, 2012

Essential Fatty Acids (commonly called EFA's) are fat based nutrients that every mammal (dogs, cats and humans) needs to maintain healthy function and structure of smooth muscle organs (the heart and reproductive system), to protect and build liver cells, and to maintain healthy skin, coat and strong joint tissues. They have also been linked to retinal development antioxidant activities, and they're responsible for the synthesis and modulation of various biochemicals that serve as mediators for the body's vairous physiologic processes. In other words, if a body does not receive sufficient amounts of EFA's critical body functions can be severely disrupted.

Dogs and cats that are deficient in EFA's typically develop chronic skin and coat disorder, digestive problems, cardiovascular disease, degenerative eye disease, and allergies, Even animals who show no obvious signs of chronic disease will often display dramatic benefits from an EFA-enriched diet very quickly. A shinier and softer coat, less shedding, healthier skin, fewer fleas, and better tolerance to flea bites and other allergns can be seen within just a few weeks of first feeding. Fleas hate a healthy host - meaning your pet- so help your dog or cat fight fleas from the inside out with essential fatty acid supplementation.

  • Frankie's Story - if you love 'em, put a tag on 'em

    April 13, 2012

    Frankie's Story
We found him about a month ago, running across a busy highway right near the Austin airport. Somehow he managed to cross 6 lanes unharmed. He had a collar but no tag. Long story short, we did everything we could to find the owner, but with no luck. It's a mystery as to where he came from and why he had no tag - he's just an awesome dog.

The HELLO MY NAME IS tag suits him so well...personable, care-free, loving, and a little comedic. We're just glad we were in the right place at the right time and found little Frankie.

Sadly, Frank's story is all too common. That's why we're inviting you to celebrate National Pet ID Week with us (April 15-April 21). Tag or re-tag your best buddy with 10% Savings on ID Tags all month long. Use promo code TAGME at checkout.

If you love 'em, put a tag on 'em!

  • National Poison Prevention Week - Top 5 Dog Poisons to Avoid

    March 28, 2012

It's National Poison Prevention Week. Which makes for a good time to review the top 5 things that can be poisonous to your dog. Last year, there were more than 100,000 cases of pet poisoning in the US (according to our staff vet advisor, it's the number one reason for emergency visits to the vet). Many of these were caused by substances you probably have in your home and may seem perfectly harmless to you and me. Some dog poisons are simply foods and medications we take on a regular basis.

    Animal Poison Control Center

Depending upon how much your pet consumes and how its system reacts, symptoms can include gastrointestinal and neurological problems, cardiac and respiratory distress, coma and even death.

Here are a few things to avoid:

    1. People medications, in particular NSAIDS like ibuprofen, and anti-depressants

    2. Flea and Tick products You may think that topicals are safe and you're doing your buddy a favor when you apply these, but thousands of animals are unintentionally poisoned by them every year. There's a reason why they now carry the equivalent of a black-box warning and why Fipronil, a powerful neurological agent found in Frontlineis deadly to parasites, and toxic to humans. Check out Olive's Flea & Tick section for ways to beat the flea naturally.

    3. People Foods Contrary to what we've been told, not all people food is bad. Carrots, apples and many veges are great ways to 'treat' your dog. However, some foods are definitely off-limits. Animals have different metabolisms than people. Foods and beverages that are perfectly safe for people can be dangerous, sometimes fatal, for dogs - chocolate, avocado, grapes and raisins, alcohol, and xylitol (an artificial sweetener found in gum, etc) should be avoided.

    4. Household Cleaners -Cleaners like bleach can poison people and pets, and they're the leading cause of pet poisoning. Instead choose plant-derived cleaners that do as good a job without toxic chemicals or fumes.

    5. Fertilizer Products for your lawn and garden may be poisonous to pets that ingest them. Fortunately, there are safe alternatives equally rich in chlorophyll, antioxidants and vitamins, such as Pet Greens Garden.

Most pain relievers work by addressing the pain, but not the core problem - inflammation.
    Healthy Joints & Bones
Chinese herbs which have been used for thousands of years to support health, work at the root of the problem by bringing the body into balance. Herbsmith Sound Dog Viscosity easy-to-administer soft chew supplement for dogs features a glucosamine-based formula as well as chondroitin, MSM, Hyaluronic Acid, and Chinese herbs to promote thick and viscous joint fluid to absorb concussion within the body and joint.
