This contemporary cat bowl features a whimsical mirror image of a cat peering back. Each bowl is made entirely by hand by British designer Reiko Kaneko. Born in Britain, but raised in Japan, the bowls are an inimitable blend of Reiko's English and Japanese heritage.
Bowl measures 18cm x 4.5cm (7" x 2" deep)
Reiko Kaneko ceramics are made from fine bone china in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire by highly skilled craftspeople. The result is a mix of centuries-old production techniques and contemporary design.
In 1748 Thomas Frye and Edward Heylyn discovered that by mixing bone ash into china clay, they could produce a porcelain of brilliant whiteness and luminescence but also of extraordinary durability.
Until the later part of the twentieth century, bone china remained almost exclusively an English product, with production being effectively localized to Stoke. Much of Britain’s ceramics industry has since moved abroad but a small and vital industry of mould makers, model makers and casters still exists there.
By buying a Reiko Kaneko design, you are buying a small artifact of this fading community of expert ceramicists centered in Staffordshire for more than two centuries.
